How to Choose A Domain Name for Your UK Business (And Where to Buy It)

Starting a business in the UK? One of the first steps to building your online presence is choosing and registering the perfect domain name. Your domain is your digital shopfront – it’s how people find you online and forms a key part of your brand identity.

In this guide, we’ll cover:

  • How to choose a domain name for your UK business
  • Where to buy your domain name in the UK
  • Whether to buy your domain and hosting from the same provider
  • Whether you’re a sole trader, startup, or small business, getting your domain name right from the start can save you hassle down the line.

How to Choose the Right Domain Name for Your UK Business

Choosing a domain name isn’t just about availability – it’s about making the best possible first impression.

1. Use Your Business Name (Or a Clear Variation)

Start with your registered business name or trading name. If it’s available, grab the exact match (e.g. www.markandsons.co.uk). If not, try simple variations:

  • Add a location: markandsons-london.co.uk
  • Add your industry: markandsonsplumbing.co.uk
  • Use a short form or abbreviation: mandsons.co.uk

Tip: Avoid creative spellings or obscure words that are hard to spell or remember. One of our early businesses (back in 1999) was called www.webmarquetry.com – no one could spell the domain name (and a lot couldn’t even pronounce it!). Not ideal!

2. Stick to .co.uk (or Buy Both .co.uk and .com)

For UK-based businesses, a .co.uk domain is a strong signal that you’re local and trustworthy. If you trade internationally, consider also buying the .com version to protect your brand.

Other UK-specific extensions to consider:

  • .uk (clean, modern, and shorter)
  • .ltd.uk (reserved for registered limited companies)
  • .scot, .wales, .cymru (for regional businesses)

You can check availability of .co.uk and .uk domains using Nominet’s WHOIS tool.

If you are a club or organisation then both the .club and .org extensions can work well

3. Keep It Short, Simple and Memorable

A good domain is:

  • Easy to type and spell
  • No hyphens or numbers (unless it’s part of your brand)
  • Ideally under 15 characters

4. Check for Trademarks and Social Media Handles

Before buying a domain:

Search for UK trademarks on Gov.uk’s IPO website

Check social handles (Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter) for availability to keep branding consistent

Where to Buy a Domain Name in the UK

Here are the most popular and trusted domain registrars used by UK businesses:

  • 123 Reg (UK-based)
    • One of the UK’s most popular domain providers
    • Offers .co.uk, .uk, .ltd.uk and other local extensions
    • Also provides email, website builders, and hosting
    • We used to use 123-Reg but have started to move our business to Ionos following large increases in charges
  • IONOS by 1&1
    • UK-friendly packages for small businesses
    • Offers domain, hosting, business email, and site builder bundles
    • Great value for start-ups with first-year discounts
    • We currently use Ionos for our domain name purchases
  • Namecheap
    • Based in the US
    • Known for low-cost domains and free WHOIS privacy
    • Good if you want to buy the domain separately from hosting
    • Excellent dashboard and easy management
  • GoDaddy UK
    • Huge global provider with local UK support
    • Often bundles domain with business tools (e.g. email, SSL, hosting)
    • Great starting offers, more expensive at renewal
    • Not the best reputation for customer service although we haven’t had issues with our dealings in the past

Should You Buy Your Domain and Hosting from the Same Company?

A very common question for small businesses is:

“Should I buy my domain name from the same place I get web hosting?”

Pros of Buying Both Together:

  • Easier setup (especially if you’re non-technical)
  • Domain automatically connected to hosting
  • All services managed in one dashboard
  • Some hosts offer free domains for the first year

Cons:

  • Renewal prices for domains may be higher
  • Limited flexibility if you want to move to another host later
  • Some providers charge extra for services like WHOIS privacy or DNS management

Best of Both Worlds?

You can:

  • Buy your domain from a dedicated registrar like Ionos or Namecheap
  • Point it to your web hosting (e.g. WebHostingUK (based in York), Squarehost (based in Norwich) or Siteground)
  • If you plan to change hosts in the future or want more control, keeping the domain separate can be a smart move.

What You’ll Need to Register a Domain Name in the UK

Registering a domain name takes just a few minutes. You’ll need:

  • Your business or personal details (some domains require a UK address)
  • A payment method (credit card or PayPal)
  • Optional: an idea for a business email or website name to go with the domain
  • For .ltd.uk domains, your company must be officially registered with Companies House.

Final Thoughts: Choose Your Domain Name Carefully

Your domain name is a long-term investment in your business. It affects your branding, your credibility, and how easy it is for people to find you online. Stick with a .co.uk or .uk domain, keep it simple, and buy from a reputable UK registrar.

Once you’ve secured the name, you’re ready to build your website, set up email, and start growing your online presence.
