Is it time to move from X (Twitter) to BlueSky?

As a UK business in 2025, deciding whether to maintain a presence on X (formerly Twitter) or move to Bluesky involves considering several factors. Both platforms have their own strengths and weaknesses, and the best choice for your business will depend on your specific goals and target audience.

X (Twitter)

X remains a major player in the social media landscape, with a large and diverse user base. It can be a valuable platform for:

  • Brand awareness: X’s reach can help you get your brand in front of a wide audience.
  • Real-time engagement: X is ideal for engaging with customers and followers in real time, responding to queries and feedback.
  • News and updates: Sharing company news, updates, and announcements on X can keep your audience informed.
  • Customer service: X can be used as a channel for providing customer support and resolving issues.

However, X has also faced challenges in recent years, including concerns about content moderation and changes to its platform policies. These issues may make some businesses hesitant to rely solely on X for their social media marketing.

Bluesky

Bluesky is a newer platform that has gained popularity as an alternative to X. It offers a decentralized approach, giving users more control over their data and content. Bluesky may be a good option for:

  • Community building: Bluesky’s focus on user control and customization can make it a good platform for building and engaging with niche communities.
  • Privacy-conscious users: If your target audience values privacy, Bluesky’s decentralized nature may be appealing.
  • Early adopters: Bluesky is still relatively new, so it could be a good opportunity to get in on the ground floor and establish your presence early on.

However, Bluesky’s user base is still smaller than X’s, and it currently lacks some of the features that businesses may find useful, such as advertising tools.

Advertising/Marketing Viability

Both X and Bluesky can be used for advertising and marketing, but their approaches differ:

  • X: X offers a range of advertising options, including promoted tweets, targeted ads, and influencer marketing. Its large user base provides a broad reach for your marketing campaigns.
  • Bluesky: Bluesky is currently ad-free, so marketing on the platform relies on organic reach and engagement. This may involve creating high-quality content, building relationships with influencers, and participating in relevant communities.

Ultimately, the decision of whether to stay on X or move to Bluesky depends on your business’s specific needs and goals. Consider the following factors:

  • Target audience: Where is your target audience most active?
  • Marketing goals: What are you hoping to achieve with your social media presence?
  • Resources: Do you have the resources to manage accounts on multiple platforms?
  • Risk tolerance: Are you comfortable with the potential risks associated with X, such as content moderation concerns?

It may also be worth considering a multi-platform approach, maintaining a presence on both X and Bluesky to reach a wider audience and diversify your social media marketing efforts.

Additional Tips:

  • Claim your username: Regardless of which platform you choose, claim your business’s username as soon as possible to prevent others from using it.
  • Create high-quality content: Focus on creating engaging and informative content that will resonate with your target audience.
  • Engage with your audience: Respond to comments and messages, and participate in relevant conversations.
  • Monitor your performance: Track your social media analytics to see what’s working and what’s not.

By carefully considering your options and developing a solid social media strategy, you can use X and/or Bluesky to effectively reach your target audience and achieve your business goals.
